Saturday, April 25, 2009 THANK YOU TO ALL THOSE WHO SUPPORTED MEXIC-ARTE MUSEUM'S 25th ANNIVERSARY GALA DE PLATA!
Mexic-Arte Museum 's 25th Anniversary Gala de Plata was celebrated in honor of twenty-five years of enriching
the community through outreach education programs and exhibitions
focusing on traditional and contemporary Mexican, Latino, and Latin
American art
and culture. Proceeds
from the evening will help support Mexic-Arte Museum to continue providing engaging experiences for our youth and
our communities, including fine art exhibitions, educational programs,
and cultural events.
With generous support from the board of directors, sponsors, donors, and members, Mexic-Arte Museum – one of the few of its kind in the United States – has been able to promote the cultural diversity and understanding that strengthens our communities and makes Texas unique. Continued support is critical for the Museum to grow into the future and carry on its mission of creating a positive impact in people’s lives – especially at a young age when a well-rounded education can make a vital difference.
Since 1984, Mexic-Arte Museum’s outreach classes taught by local artists have educated over 100,000 children in Central Texas’ neediest communities. On January 11, 2001, Mexic-Arte Museum received major support from the City of Austin to purchase the building on 419 Congress Avenue, in exchange for services to produce an annual exhibition of art created by underserved teenagers. For the past twenty-five years, Mexic-Arte Museum has celebrated Austin’s most vibrant and longest running Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) procession and festival, drawing thousands of participants each year of all ages and backgrounds.
Mexic-Arte Museum’s exhibitions – some of which have traveled to other museums – have showcased the finest established and emerging artists from the United States, Mexico, and Latin America. In 1993, Mexic-Arte Museum became the Official Sister Museum of the Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo Studio Museum in Mexico City. In 2003, the Museum signed an agreement with the Mexico’s National Council of Arts and Culture (CONACULTA) to present art exhibitions on a long-term loan basis. That same year, the 78th Legislature of the State of Texas recognized the Museum’s significant cultural role, designating it the Official Mexican and Mexican American Fine Art Museum of Texas.
